WHAT HAPPENED ON THE ROAD FROM THE CRUCIFIXION TO THE RESURRECTION?
Three layers of reality hold the three different stories that unfolded on the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection. Not one. Not two. But three.
Keep in mind that reality is thick not thin. Reality is thick because it does not consist of a single layer. Multiple layers give reality its thickness. They form a stack. Furthermore, different stories are written on the different layers of reality. Each layer of reality is a substrate for a story.
What happened on the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection? How many stories were written there? Just one? More than one? Let’s count them.
With this in mind, we can see three layers of reality on the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection into three (3) layers.
FLESH AND BLOOD LAYER
The bottom layer is the flesh and blood layer. Flesh and blood were given and taken. We took from him his flesh and blood. He spent his flesh and blood. On the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection, there was a give and take of Jesus’s flesh and blood. The bottom layer of the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection is not about Jesus’s unlimited divine resources. The bottom layer is about his limited human resources. He spent them all for us. He did not keep a penny of his flesh and blood for himself. He has never spent more for anything else. It was an exorbitant price for Jesus to pay. The size of his expenditure is the best evidence of the size of his love for us.
ANSWER LAYER
The middle layer is the answer layer. We did evil to Jesus by taking from him his flesh and blood. Jesus gave us his answer to the evil that we did to him. What was his answer? What did Jesus purchase for us by spending his flesh and blood? Jesus purchased for us the gift of forgiveness (Jeremiah 31:31-34)(Luke 23:34)(Acts 10:43) (Matthew 6:12) (Matthew 18:21-35). The gentleness of his answer to us contrasts sharply with the evil that we did to him. The greater was the evil that we did to Jesus, the more astonishing is the gentleness of his answer to it. Through his bloody wounds, Jesus poured the sweet syrup of forgiveness into the Valley of Tears to dilute its toxicity in the same way that sugar cubes dilute the bitterness of a cup of bad coffee.
REVELATION LAYER
The top layer is the revelation layer. At the time that we took his flesh and blood from him, we did not know what his answer would be to the evil that we did to him. He was a stranger to us. Now we know. Our God is no longer a stranger to us. The vehicle that conveyed the knowledge of God to us was the vehicle of forgiveness (Jeremiah 31:31-34)(Luke 23:34)(Acts 10:43) (Matthew 6:12) (Matthew 18:21-35). Through forgiveness, Jesus revealed to us the sweet truth about God.
Forgiveness is the sweet fruit of love. Therefore, we can reverse engineer what happened on the road from the Crucifixion to the Resurrection from the premise of forgiveness to the conclusion of a loving God.
